Things change when expectations of a return get close. Houses have received more cumulative cleaning in the last few hours before a Mommy or Daddy’s return than all other cleaning times combined. Work efficiency increases dramatically in hours immediately preceding the big boss, inspector or owner’s scheduled arrival. Children often receive much more enthusiastic lessons as the principal makes an appearance in the classroom.
Attitudes and actions change upon the announcement that the major authority, most loved or most revered is about to arrive. Jesus is all three, and he announces that nobody knows the day or the hour, but that when He comes back it will be quickly. (Matthew 24:36, Revelation 22:12,20)
What would we do differently if Jesus Christ was in our presence in bodily form right now? It would make since to start now thinking, feeling and doing the way we will in his fleshly presence, because we are already living in the presence of His Holy Spirit. Once He comes back quickly, it will be too late to adjust our appreciation mode. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
