It has been stated in many sermons that we are either in a storm, exiting a storm, or facing a storm in the near future. Florida residents know about storms, but most have not learned their lessons about preparing for storms. Recent news reports revealed that the majority of Florida residents do not have an evacuation plan. Shocking information considering the numbers of hurricanes predicted for any given year that could affect Florida, and put in context by the large numbers of deadly and devastating hurricanes that have affected Florida in the past.
Speaking of the storms of life, Jesus has his children covered from coast to coast. Jesus can calm the fiercest of storms, whether they be political storms, popularity storms, wind storms or fill in the blank with your storm. Jesus demonstrated his ability to protect hearts from the fiercest storms of life as recorded in John 6:15-47. Jesus left the storms caused by superficial popularity and went into the Mountains to be alone. He protected his own heart.
The disciples then got into the boat and started back across the sea toward Capernaum after dark. One of the vital elements of Coast Guard work is to remain calm even while upon a stormy sea. John records the rest this way in verses 18-20 of John 6. (NKJV)
Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
The next verse records that they received him into the boat and they were immediately safe and on land, if safe was not good enough. Jesus calmed their hearts that were raging with emotion.
No matter the storm type, intensity or location, Jesus sometimes calms the storms, and other times He calms our hearts in the midst of storms. You could say when it comes to guarding our hearts, we have coast to coast coverage.
