The most appreciated breath of air is the one taken after an extended period of holding one’s breath. Seeing how long one can hold one’s breath often begins in childhood while learning to swim. In childhood everything translates into a competition. Children compete to see who can hold their breath the longest while staying under water. Of course you can easily see relief in the expressions children make as they come up out of water for a much needed breath of air.
Christians often feel like they are drowning under a sea of service and temptations. It may be time to take a breather. Being reminded that relationship with God is not dependent upon being good enough or not being too bad is like coming up out of the sea for a breath of air.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9, nkjv)
